Dr. Hasham Al-Meshhedani — Patient Engagement at Digipharm

Dr.Hasham Al- Al-Meshhedani is an Anesthetics & Critical Care Doctor with a background in Physiology and Pharmacology. He is diversely experienced in multiple medical specialties including Oncology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Endocrinology. Involved in medical education and the use of technology to advance “Point of Care Learning” in the workplace. His current projects include research into advancing healthcare efficiency through innovative technologies.

How long have you been a clinician, and what is your specialty?
I have been a qualified doctor for… 9 years!….Gosh! How time flies!
Since qualifying, I have been through a number of specialties within medicine. This includes general internal medicine, emergency medicine and oncology to name just a few. However, I am currently a specialist registrar in Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
What is your role with Digipharm, and what drove you to join the team?
I have always been interested in digital health. Playing with expensive gadgets and new technology is what drove me to my chosen specialty! When I saw the emergence of blockchain technologies I immediately started to wonder about the possible benefits to the wider healthcare system.
My background prior to the medical profession was in Physiology and Pharmacology: the study of how drugs work and how they affect the body as well as the study surrounding drug development. This too has been something that highly interests me. So, Digipharm ticks all these boxes for me.
As a clinician I have a duty to be an advocate for my patients and I strive to practice evidence based medicine to improve patient outcomes according to the latest evidence and guidelines. I am also a passionate believer in value based care being the missing piece for modern healthcare systems. Especially in the NHS, as clinicians we have the responsibility to improve the outcomes of our patients while improving healthcare efficiency. With digipharm we can reduce the problem of access to expensive treatments because with value based pricing we can reduce the burden from drugs that are less effective and focus on more effective treatments depending on the outcomes that we want to achieve.
My role within Digipharm is to bring together patients and clinicians to improve access and engagement to shape the future of this platform to meet their needs across multiple disciplines.

How can innovative pricing models change the healthcare industry?
Its simple really- people and healthcare systems will pay the right price for the right medications. These drugs make a difference to patients outcomes. Pricing structures based on outcomes as opposed to volume will free up resources to drugs that make a difference in the lives of patients. It incentivises pharmaceutical companies to work hard to provide drugs that do the intended job and do it well.

Can you think of a time where value based pricing models would have changed a patients life, or made your job different/better?
In 2016 the NHS in the UK spent £16.8 Billion on medicines, this had gone up by 8% from the year before and 29% form 6 years before that! Its simply not sustainable. Value based pricing is a solution that all healthcare systems need, and have needed for quite some time. It will be for the benefit of all patients, collectively, and allow us to ensure that medicines are priced according to the outcomes that they help to produce. We can monitor these outcomes through the real world evidence database, Insights.

DIGIPHARM Takes 2nd Place at 2018 Blockchain Leadership Summit Pitch Competition | Exhibits at Denver Day4Crypto


Its been an event packed week for the Digipharm team! Ahmed Abdulla, CEO and Girisha Fernando, COO attended and presented at The Blockchain Leadership Summit March 9th in Zurich. The following day, Zach Daniels, CTO attended and exhibited at the Day4Crypto in Denver, Colorado.

Numerous industry leaders gathered to attend The Blockchain Leadership Summit in Zurich, Switzerland on March 9th to discuss the current state and foreseen future of the decentralized world. Digipharm not only exhibited, but we also had the opportunity to participate in the startup pitch competition. This was our first time presenting in a pitch competition and out of 30 participants, Digipharm took 2nd place! The feedback our team received was overwhelmingly positive.

Denver Day4Crypto

The Day4Crypto on March 10 focused on educating members of the crypto community about approachable entry points into the world of blockchains and valuable additional resources for those fully immersed in the industry. There was an array of attendees, from seasoned professionals to those who are just getting their feet wet in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain.
Zach and Meredith spoke to hundreds of people about the Digipharm vision, all in all- everyone agreed that our solutions were sorely needed and a great use case for blockchain.

The Problem

Inherent flaws and infrastructural limitations of the global healthcare systems result in substantial inefficiency, wastage and sub-optimal health outcomes for the most important stakeholder; the patient.
Innovative pricing models provide viable solutions to the aforementioned problems. Unfortunately, most healthcare providers or payers around the world lack the relevant infrastructure to track and implement outcomes based pricing agreements, and so are shy in adopting innovative pricing contracts and policies. In healthcare today, there is a lack of incentive for health systems and providers to focus on mutually beneficial collaboration and the maximization of patient outcomes. Though it is widely agreed that the transition to value based pricing is necessary, progress in doing so has been slow.
In addition to the barriers in implementing outcome based pricing, patient data is fragmented. The lack of easily accessible and comprehensive real world evidence (RWE) data currently prevents stakeholders in healthcare to evaluate the real time performance and value provided by therapy in real life clinical practice as part of a value based healthcare delivery system.

Digipharm’s Flagship Solutions





By using public and private blockchains, we will facilitate and accelerate the restructure of healthcare to a value based model, and improve patient outcomes by providing access to real world evidence. Digipharm’s dynamic ecosystem features two platforms- Reimburse and Insights.

REIMBURSE
Thus far, the biggest hurdle in moving away from the inefficient fee for service pricing models has been infrastructural limitations. Reimburse will allow patients, providers, and health authorities to align in a way that mitigates risk and improves patient outcomes through outcome based pricing. Using smart contracts, Reimburse will facilitate real time application of personalized and performance based innovative pricing solutions between payers and manufacturers. Seamless integration with existing health information systems and administrative infrastructure of participating institutions will eliminate the need for manual data handling and processing of pricing agreements. The Reimburse platform will drastically reduce administrative costs currently associated with the implementation of value-based pricing schemes and potentially revolutionize drug pricing and healthcare provision as we know it today.

INSIGHTS
Insights is the world’s first live real world evidence (RWE) data repository. Anonymized data from the Reimburse platform will be extracted to create this repository. Additional health related data such as genomic data will also be linked to the Insights platform in partnership with leading evidence providers in the industry, to create an unparalleled health data marketplace in preparation for a value-based, data-driven future of healthcare. The use of cryptographically encrypted blockchain technology also eliminates all patient privacy and data security concerns that affect current RWE generation systems. RWE is playing an increasingly influential role in informing decision making within the healthcare industry and yet the delay of RWE outputs, the expenses of data access and the current methods of data collection negate many of the benefits of utilizing these rich data resources.
Insights will provide a symbiotic solution with Reimburse to complement the progressive transformation towards value based healthcare delivery systems.
